If it’s not printed, is it even a photograph?

Seeing a finished image displayed on a screen is always a nice feeling but actually holding a physical print gives a completely different level of satisfaction and connection.

How many photos do you have stored on your computer or phone that you are “going” to print out or make a book or album of?

How many of us never get round to it and they stay hidden on your harddrive?

Digital photos are important – just as imagination, thoughts and dreams are. But dreams disappear, thoughts are forgotten, and imagination begs to come to life in the real world. Like a play that is never performed or a musical score that is never played it loses the it’s real purpose.

Print has the advantage of being easily displayed and viewed everyday. A small print on your office desk, a large wall portrait over the living room sofa, a few framed photos on the mantle... when your images are printed and on display you're guaranteed to see your beautiful images everyday!

The thing is, making a good print is not easy and requires a knowledge of the printing process and the specific requirements of the printing lab you choose to use. Unfortunately , it’s not as simple as sending a digital file to your print lab or your home printer, you need to prepare them first. The thing is when you view a photo on a screen it is lit from the back so if you send your digital photo directly to the print lab it often looks dark and lifeless. How many times have you printed a special photo only to be disappointed when you receive it as it doesn’t look anything like the screen version?

  • sRGB, Adobe RGB, Prophet

  • 8-bit vs 16-bit

  • pixel size/file size/print size

  • Paper choice

If all this jargon leaves you scratching your head you are definitely not alone. However a professional photographer understands all these terms and has access to professional print labs and their software to ensure your photos are printed correctly and professionally and last a lifetime.

Many photographers deliver digital files on a usb stick or upload a gallery to the internet only to leave their customers confused as to what and how to print their photos and they are often never printed. At db portraits we hold your hand through the whole process from choosing your photos to choosing your print products to delivery whether you choose matted prints in a folio box or wall art. You will of course also receive digital files of the photos you choose to share on your social media or with your friends. So you have the best of both worlds!!

Don't let your photos die on your harddrive! Print them, see them, love them, share them, adore them!
